Certainly seems to have been a day for Gatekeeper butterflies at Bedelands.  I saw 10 this morning feeding on nectar from a single Ragwort plant in Big Field.

Hundreds of minibeasts and pond life were found by 170 children at the Annual Children’s Safari at Bedelands Local Nature Reserve during the afternoon.  Various bugs, butterflies, slugs, pond skaters and others were found in leaf litter, overhanging branches, grass and ponds.  Not all were identified but each one was carefully looked at and at least had it legs counted!  The 70 parents and grand-parents were equally enthralled by the sheer number of ‘creepy crawlies’ and the variety of colour and shapes.

On a warm and sometimes sunny morning we found the following damselflies at the Mill Pond adjacent to Bedelands LNR:-  5 blue-tailed, 4 common blue, 3 black-tailed, 1 white-legged (which is the first for Bedelands and obligingly landed right on my arm so I got a good look at it.  There was also the ‘giant’ emperor dragonfly hawking the entire lake.

(Ed’s note: This area can only be seen from the footpath on the western bank.  The remainder is private and access is only to members of the Haywards Heath Angling Society via a locked gate.  Barbara has special permission to survey dragonflies from the other banks.)

Several glow worms can be seen along Gatehouse Lane, Goddards Green as darkness falls.   We see an average of 5 or 6 per night at the moment.
