A misty morning walk over Bedelands and the surrounding land revealed plenty of birds including Great Spotted woodpecker of which one was seen and several more heard.  A Treecreeper, a Nuthatch and a goldcrest along with the usual complement of tits and other common birds.

A 2-hour 'Bird Count' on Bedelands became a 4-hour nature walk as five members had such an enjoyable time.  Bird song was everywhere and a few redwing were still around awaiting the correct departure time for Scandinavia.  Woodpeckers were drumming while two buzzards flew overhead  The highlight of the morning was the discovery of a new site for brown hairstreak eggs near the Mill Pond, which was also next to a long-tailed tit building its intricate nest.  28 species of birds were recoded.

We started our bird walk in Malthouse Lane beside the gated entrance to West Park.  Plenty of bird song but nothing special until we reached the rugby club where over the hedge in Southway School’s playing field there was a redwing and a fieldfare.  The Maltings produced long-tailed tits, finch flocks and more song (plus loads of rubbish in Snake Wood!)  Through the Coulstock Open Space and over the road to the Pookebourne ford where there were a couple of grey wagtails and more redwings.  Nothing was taking an interest in the new ‘Green O’ bird boxes yet but courting bluetits were overhead and a solitary heron.  Pangdean Lane and meadows were very quiet, apart from noisy jackdaws flying over, before completing our interesting circuit and back to the buntings from our kitchen window whilst sipping coffee.  In all 25 species were seen.

The morning began and ended watching the antics of a flock of reed buntings on my bird feeding tray in the garden.  They have been delightful and what a surprise as they usually spend their time on the other side of Stirling Close in Sandra’s garden!

Around 12:45 on Tuesday at the woods in Clair Hall Meadow in Haywards Heath TQ 333 243 1 Lesser Redpoll. Other birds seen in the wood in half an hour included Tree Creeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tit.  Remarkably, no blackbirds; you are normally tripping over them around there.
